Internship Energy-related subjects

We try to keep the Energy Transition Model as up to date as possible when it comes to the technologies, sectors and options covered. Will you help us do so?

About the internships

We are looking for an intern that:

  • is proactive

We are offering internship positions in which you will take part in researching and implementing new technologies and additions to the ETM. Currently we are considering the following topics for energy research internships (list may change):

Energy research topics

The work will mostly consist of literature research and some implementation into the back end of the ETM.

  1. International transport (bunkering): Although not included in national energy statistics, bunkering is an important part of the energy system. We would like to give the users of the ETM a better idea of the size and impact of international aviation and shipping on the total energy system.
  2. Biomass cascades: the ETM already distinguishes several forms of solid, liquid and gaseous biomass but does not detail how these different types can be cascaded down from highly valuable uses (as feedstock for industry for instance) to ultimate use as fuel (burning). Also, the biofootprint calculation of the ETM currently does not take crop rotations into account and, therefore, overestimates the areable land needed for biofuels.
  3. modeling of heat: The ETM currently does not take into account that there are many forms of heat. High and low temperature heat have very different applications and value in the energy system.

Energy modeling topics

The work will mostly consist of designing improvements of the model and implementation into the back end of the ETM.

  1. Combined heat and power (CHP): the model currently treats CHP as either following a heat demand or as an active participant in the national electricity market (merit order). In reality, however, CHP can do both at the same time. We would like to improve the modeling of CHP which will improve the model in many ways: energetically, with respect to the needed back-up capacity of power plants, with respect to electricity prices and much more.
  2. Industry in a low CO2 future:
    1. Geothermal energy for industrial heat demand
    2. Include industrial heat pumps
    3. Hydrogen as a universal energy carrier for industry
    4. Upgrading and recycling residual heat

Our Projects

We are always extending and improving the Energy Transition Model (ETM). Currently, we are working on making the ETM available to all municipalities, neighbourhoods and streets in the Netherlands.

We can make sure that your internship has a sufficiently academic character, yet contributes to a product that people need to be able to use.

Supervision

We have ample experience in conducting academic research. Since we supervise about three to four interns each year, we also have the required experience in guiding academic research.

Duration

Internships last a minimum of 6 months. We do not encourage a shorter period since it will take a significant amount of time to get to know the field of energy thoroughly. Longer periods are an option.

Location

Our office in Amsterdam. You will be allowed to spend some of your time at another location (e.g. the university) if required.

Allowance

Interns receive remuneration of 500 Euros per month. Travel expenses will be reimbursed.
